OBJECTIVE #1 Take on a project and see it to its end.

  • Potential Obstacles: We work by 6 week cycles (similar to sprints) where it can be easy to lose focus or forget to plan ahead to ensure the successful completion of your projects.
  • Actions: Understand the value of a successful cycle completion and use your tenacity to carry each project to the very end.
  • Results: Your project completion numbers in Jira are stellar and you have concentration available for the handful of projects on your plate.

OBJECTIVE #2 Work as a synchronous team in a remote environment.

  • Potential Obstacles: Working remote has many personal and team-based challenges from timezone differences, to communication and trust of your colleagues.
  • Actions: Develop deep working relationships with your colleagues to know what they're working on, and how to support each other.
  • Results: The team culture is strong, Rebilly's bigger projects efficiently move forward.

OBJECTIVE #3 Help your colleagues raise their skills with thoughtful code reviews and feedback on ideas.

  • Potential Obstacles: Your day will be filled with your own projects and priorities, and offering feedback to a remote team from afar can be intimidating.
  • Actions: Prioritize your schedule and share your unique knowledge and experience to help make your team stronger.
  • Results: Your team is more precise, creative, and their knowledge is deepened with your help.

KEY FUNCTIONAL AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY What will you manage? Each teammate receives a role within a small team per cycle that can include a handful of small projects, one large project, or staying outside of the cycle to support clients, bugs, and cycle planning. Along with that, you'll be responsible for ensuring adherence to programming and documentation policies, code standards, testing, release, and reporting updates on your projects.

What will you contribute to? You will contribute to code reviews, generating projects for each cycle, feedback for ideas (including the ideas for other areas of the company), and hiring new teammates in the Product Team.

What will you support? Outside of generally supporting your teammates in the Product Circle, Rebilly is an open environment where everyone is welcome in every area of the company. You are welcome to support any project you feel called to participate in.

How much support per project? Teams working in a cycle can be 1, 2, or sometimes 4 people. You will lean on your cycle teammates to support the completion of the cycle, as well as receive support from teammates supporting the cycle. You can ask as many teammates to join your project as you need to complete the mission.

InReach Ventures Back-end Developer
  • Remote Italy/UK
  • Full-time

InReach is changing how VC in Europe works, for good. Through data, software and Machine Learning, we are building an in-house platform to help us find, reach-out to and invest in early-stage European startups, regardless of the city or country they're based in.

We are looking for a back-end developer to continue the development of InReach's data services. This involves:

  • Cleaning / wrangling / merging / processing the data on companies and founders from across Europe
  • Building data pipelines with the Machine Learning engineers
  • Building APIs to support front-end investment product used by the Investment team (named DIG)

This role will involve working across the stack. From DevOps (Terraform) to web scraping and Machine Learning (Python) all the way to data pipelines and web-services (Java) and getting stuck into the front-end (Javascript). It's a great opportunity to hone your skills and master some new ones.

It is important to us that candidates be passionate about helping entrepreneurs and startups. This is our bread-and-butter and we want you to be involved.

InReach is a remote-first employer and we are looking to this hire to help us become an exceptional place to work for remote employees. Whether you are in the office or remote, we are looking for people with excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Background Reading

Responsibilities

  • Creatively and quickly coming up with effective solutions to undefined problems
  • Choosing technology that is modern but not hype-driven
  • Developing features and tests quickly with good, clean code
  • Being part of the wider development team, reviewing code and participating in architecture from across the stack
  • Communicating exceptionally, both asynchronously (written) and synchronously (spoken)
  • Helping to shape InReach as a remote-first organization

Interview Process

  • 15m video chat with Ben, CTO to find out more about InReach and the role
  • 2h data pipeline technical test (Python)
  • 2h web service technical test (Java)
  • 30m architectural discussion with Ben, talking through the work you did
  • 2h interview with the different team members from across InReach. We're a small company so it's important we see how we'll all work together - not just the tech team!

Requirements

Given that this position touches so much of the stack, it will be difficult for a candidate that only has experience in Python or only in Java to be successful in being effective quickly. While we expect the candidate to be stronger in one or the other, some professional exposure is required.

In addition to the programming skills and the ability to write well designed and tested code, infrastructure within modern cloud platforms and sound architectural reasoning are expected.

None of these are a prerequisite, but help:

  • Functional Programming
  • Reactive Streams (RxJava2)
  • Terraform
  • Postgres
  • ElasticSearch
  • SQS
  • Dynamodb
  • AWS Lambda
  • Docker
  • Dropwizard
  • Maven
  • Pipenv
  • Javascript
  • React
  • NodeJS

Benefits

  • Equity and equivalent interest in the investments we make
  • Remote-first organization, whether you're in the London office or working remote!
  • Pension contributions
  • Private health insurance where applicable

Koyo Senior Frontend Engineer
  • Remote Anywhere
  • Full-time

June 11, 2020

This job post is over 30 days old. It's very likely the position is already filled.
Try applying to a more recent job post instead.

Description

Who we are

The current system of credit, based on bureau data, is deeply unfair, penalising people who live in lower income areas, people who are new to the country or customers who have used high risk products in the past (such as payday loans). Koyo was founded in 2018, on the principle that everyone should have access to affordable credit regardless of where they are from, where they live, or types of credit that have used.

Many seeking credit are charged excessive fees and interest rates for borrowing that cause financial problems, rather than solve them. We’re changing all that.

Koyo uses innovative technology to offer fairly priced credit to millions of UK customers. We’re based in London, with global ambitions. Koyo is backed by leading venture capital funds (the same funds that backed the likes of Revolut, Transferwise and others) and some of the most reputable angel investors in the UK. Join us, and help put an end to predatory financial firms and be part of an exciting and rewarding journey.

Our story so far

In 2016, Thomas, the founder of Koyo moved to the UK and found accessing credit to be difficult if not impossible. This is because his credit history did not follow him from his home country. He realised that having an imperfect credit history affects millions of people who are new to the country, but also people who have failed to build a credit history in the UK more generally. In September 2018 we raised our first round of venture funding and have since raised further debt and equity funding from VCs and private investors. Our team consists of eight online lending professionals in tech, risk and marketing.

What you’ll be doing:

You will be working in a small fully distributed tech team, led by our experienced CTO, in developing the early versions of our lending product and our back office.

Our Tech Stack

The front end is a React/Redux webapp. The backend is primarily in Kotlin using Spring Boot and exposes a REST/JSON API. We use Google pub/sub for async messaging.

On the infrastructure side, we are using Docker orchestrated with Kubernetes on GCP. Terraform is used to define the infrastructure as code. Source code and CI/CD is with GitLab. Gitlab is also used to manage the backlog and our light-weight Kanban process.

Requirements

  • Entrepreneurial and excited about working at an early stage startup.

  • Confident in taking a lead role in front-end development - from the UX/UI, through to cutting the code and tests.

  • You are passionate about building products that are differentiated by the user experience. But you are also pragmatic – time to market is key.

  • You have a growth mindset: You’re excited to learn new things every day and have a passion to inspire and grow.

  • Technical excellence with in-depth experience of React and ES8 Javascript.

  • Beneficial but not essential: experience in the lending space (or fintech).

Benefits

  • This role can either be based in our central London office, 100% remote or a mix of the two.
  • Competitive salary.
  • Equity in the business - you will own a part of the company that you are helping to build.
  • Opportunity to shape the strategy and direction in a company with an important mission.
  • Working with bright ambitious people who take pride in what they do.
  • You’ll get to join one of the hottest new startups of 2019.
